Ryan Day was offered the offensive coordinator job with the Tennessee Titans this week, but he turned it down.
Now we know why.
Ohio State announced Tuesday morning that Day has been promoted to offensive coordinator. Previous offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson will remain on staff in a responsibility that will be announced at a later date.
“Ryan is clearly a very talented coach who has been an outstanding addition to our program,” Meyer said. “He has been approached by other schools numerous times this off-season for coordinator and head coach opportunities, and by the National Football League for a coordinator opportunity. I am pleased that he has elected to continue to work on this staff and to lead, mentor and coach the terrific young men we have in this program.”
In his first season on staff, Day helped J.T. Barrett turn in the best year of his career. The fifth-year senior leaped from 55th to eighth nationally in passing efficiency, as his yards per attempt grew from 6.7 to 8.2. Ohio State also led the Big Ten in rushing, passing, total yards and scoring en route to winning the Big Ten and the Cotton Bowl, banking a No. 5 final ranking in both polls.
The 2017 season was Day's first season on staff (as was Wilson's) as Meyer re-worked his offensive staff following a 31-0 blanking to Clemson in the 2016 College Football Playoff semifinals.
