Lane Kiffin -- a famous coach's son -- hired Kendal Briles -- a famous coach's son -- to be his offensive coordinator upon taking the Florida Atlantic job. But Briles has since left for Houston, so Kiffin has reportedly replaced him with another famous coach's son -- Charlie Weis, Jr.
Weis, just 24 years old, was hired to the FAU staff in December as tight ends coach.
He got into coaching immediately after high school, working as a quality control assistant with the wide receivers at Florida, where his namesake father was the offensive coordinator. After Charlie Sr. got the Kansas job, Junior followed and worked as a manager while earning a degree in psychology.
Weis, Jr., spent the 2014 summer as an intern with the New England Patriots, and the 2015-16 seasons as an offensive analyst at Alabama. He was hired to Kiffin's original FAU staff as tight ends coach, but left after a month to spend the 2017 season as an offensive assistant for the Atlanta Falcons.
Florida Atlantic returns one of the best offenses in the country. The Owls, who rode a 10-game winning streak to a Conference USA championship and a Boca Raton Bowl win, closed the year ranked eighth nationally in scoring at 40.6 points per game, ninth in total offense, 11th in yards per play and sixth in rushing at more than 285 yards per game.
FAU will return junior-to-be running back Devin Singletary, who rushed for 1,920 yards and set a C-USA record with 32 touchdowns. Quarterback Jason Driskel and leading wide receiver Willie Wright are also set to return in 2018.
