Strong has now been formally announced as the program's new head coach
Charlie Strong will be the new head coach at South Florida, Pete Thamel reported Sunday morning.

Strong, of course, is fresh off a 3-year tenure as the head coach at Texas in which he posted a 16-21 record. But prior to that Strong ran up a 37-15 mark in four seasons at Louisville -- including a 23-3 mark over his final two seasons -- and was a successful defensive coordinator at South Carolina and under two head coaches at Florida. In fact, while an Arkansas native, landing the USF job gets Strong back to his home state as a coach. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Florida in 1983-84 and returned to coach with the Gators as outside linebackers coach (1988-89), defensive ends coach (1991-93), defensive tackles coach (1994) and as defensive coordinator (2003-09). The final stint included helping Florida win national championships in 2006 and 2008. Those stints -- and the championships that came with him -- built significant recruiting ties in the Sunshine State that should serve Strong well in Tampa. While many contend Strong left behind a stacked roster for Tom Herman to coach at Texas, he is set up to do the same himself at South Florida. The Bulls posted a 10-2 record in 2016 under head coach Willie Taggart while starting 16 players set to return next season in their most recent game, a 48-31 whipping of War on I-4 rival Central Florida.
