Bob Stoops, the former head coach at Oklahoma and current head coach and GM of the Dallas XFL franchise, has a book due out September 10th entitled No Excuses: The Making of a Head Coach.
An advanced copy was shared with the Tulsa World and they highlighted some of the finer points of the nearly 300-page book.
Among some of those details that our audience will find interesting:
- Stoops, who had been serving as Steve Spurrier's defensive coordinator at Florida, had a choice between Oklahoma and Iowa for his first head coaching job. He explains how he came to that decision.
- How he went about changing the culture at a program that had fallen on hard times with unimpressive facilities.
- Following the 2001 season, when Steve Spurrier headed to the NFL, Stoops almost returned to Gainesville to lead the Gators. Instead, the Gators ended up hiring former coordinator Ron Zook, who had been serving as the defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints.
- The tough decision he had to make to let go of offensive coordinator Josh Heupel, who had been a standout quarterback for the Sooners before becoming the team's offensive coordinator. He also talks about how Lincoln Riley reached out to him before dismissing his brother, Mike, as defensive coordinator last season.
