The Alliance of American Football is doing everything in their power early on to prove that their more than the typical upstart football league that fizzles out.
A big part of the hype that they've helped to build is based on the coaches they're getting to lead teams. It start with a big bang, by landing Steve Spurrier for the team in Orlando, and has expanded to former NFL and college head coaches in Brad Childress for the Atlanta team, Mike Singletary for the team in Memphis, Rick Neuheisel for the Tempe squad, Dennis Erickson for the Salt Lake team, and the league's latest addition has significant NFL roots and brings another well known name to the mix as well.
Martz has a rich coaching career dating back to the early 1970's and has had stops at Fresno State, Minnesota, and Arizona State before jumping to the NFL with the Rams in 1992 as wide receivers coach. From there he went to the Redskins before landing back with the Rams, being named head coach of the organization from 2000-2005. In 2001, he led Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, and "The Greatest Show on Turf" to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Patriots. That was Martz's only NFL head coaching gig, where he went 53-32 in six seasons. Fromm there he served as an offensive coordinator for the Lions, Niners, and Bears. This will mark a return to coaching for Martz, as the coaching veteran has been away from coaching since that stint with the bears in 2011. His coaching staff seems to be coming together with some names you'll recognize as well.
The league will actually begin play in February of 2019, which not-so-coincidentally happens to be a week after the the Super Bowl.
