In a rivalry series that dates to 2007, Norfolk State had won eight of its previous nine meetings against Virginia State -- and all eight of those wins had double-digit margins of victory for the Spartans.
On Saturday, with Football Championship Subdivision program Norfolk again facing its smaller, NCAA Division II foes from Virginia State, the rivalry -- and college football -- got one of its most bizarre finishes, ever, in the showdown of HBCU programs.
Virginia State had a three-point lead, 27-24, and attempted to run out the clock on fourth down from its own end zone -- rather than risk a punt back to the Spartans.
Instead, VSU's quarterback ran out of bounds short of the first-down marker -- and with one second left on the clock.
Norfolk State then Grandin Willcox line up for a game-tying 23-yard field goal attempt.
Chaos ensued:
