Rip Scherer has been coaching football since the mid-70's with a total of 16 stops as a college coach and three stops in the NFL.
He's coached literally from coast to coast with stops in the Pac-12 (UCLA) and ACC (Virginia, NC State, Georgia Tech), and the SEC (LSU and Alabama), Big Ten (Penn State) and Big 12 (Kansas, and Colorado).
Scherer also had stops in the NFL with the Chargers (tight ends coach and senior offensive assistant working with the quarterbacks), Panthers (pass game coordinator / quarterbacks coach), and Browns (assistant head coach / quarterbacks coach).
Now he's landed a coaching opportunity across the pond in Spain.
Scherer, who currently serves as the senior assistant and senior advisor to the head coach at UAB for Trent Dilfer, has been tabbed as the new head coach of the Madrid Bravos.
Rip will stay with UAB through March and head to Madrid in the spring, and return to his role with UAB when the Bravos season is over.
The Bravos are a first-year team in the European League of Football (ELF).
"His experience as a coach in the NFL and College are key to design and implement our high performance program in Madrid," Jaime MartΓn, the GM of Madrid shared.
"Since we started the conversations, he has made the project his own, understanding perfectly the challenges we face and our objectives. In addition, Rip brings a coaching staff that covers all our needs and will help us achieve great results."
The venture overseas will mark the third head coaching opportunity for the 71-year old, who served as the head coach at James Madison from 1991-94 where he went 29-19, culminating in a 10-win season and trip to the quarterfinals in his final season.
In 1995, Scherer left JMU to become the head coach at Memphis. He served as the Tigers head coach through 2000, accumulating a 22-44 record.
