“The Puller is the Fixer:” Wisconsin Whitewater’s BSG Pull Menu in A-Gap Power: Important distinction: A-Gap power is NOT C-Gap power. Several years ago, X&O Labs spent some time with then Wyoming OL Coach Scott Fuchs on how he teaches his A-gap power concept, with an emphasis on how he trains his puller to be the “fixer.” It was built on horizontal double teams, by forcing an A-gap entry point. It’s always rewarding to see how other programs have modeled and then tweaked these ideas to make them their intellectual property. Such is the case at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater who progressed Fuchs’ scheme into the version of its A-gap power which generated 8.8 yards per carry with a 61% efficiency rating. There are some distinctions in how Whitewater trains its fullback, which often becomes susceptible to spills at the first level. Because of this, co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Tim Shields eliminated the typical “J path” for the fullback and instead transitioned into what he calls “three-step footwork” to ensure the kickout.
