"Slides" & "Swipes": How Abilene Christian Handles the Backside of Wide Zone: Abilene Christian University (TX) majors in the wide zone concept, generating over seven yards a carry on the scheme just this season. But the offensive staff had to do something to handle the backside edge- traditional nakeds and the risky cut blocks can only take you so far. Outside zone slice became a temporary solution, but when offensive coordinator Ryan Pugh started coupling jet motion slides with those slice elements he found it was the perfect answer to displace second-level defenders. This season Coach Pugh built in two separate tags on his outside zone slide concept based on whether his QB is reading a first-level or second-level defender. He called those second level reads “expansion reads,” and it was the focus of his X&O Labs clinic report. Read more.
