Texas A&M is expected to hire Nebraska athletics director Trev Alberts to the same position, according to multiple reports out of College Station on Wednesday. The move is not as of this writing, but is moving toward the finish line.
Alberts replaces Ross Bjork, who is set to become Ohio State's athletics director following Gene Smith's retirement.
A College Football Hall of Famer, Alberts was one of the most decorated players in Cornhuskers football history: a unanimous All-American, the winner of the Dick Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Trophy, he was the 5th pick in the 1994 draft and has his No. 34 retired by the program.
He moved into media after his brief NFL career, serving as an analyst on ESPN's college football desk from 2002-05, before pivoting to become the AD at Nebraska-Omaha in 2009. In 2011, Alberts eliminated UN-O's football and national-championship wrestling program to move the school from Division II to Division I.
Alberts returned to his alma mater in 2021, where his biggest move from a football perspective was to fire Scott Frost and hire Matt Rhule as head coach following the 2022 season.
More immediately, he signed an extension in November that pays him $1.7 million this year and next, with a jump to $2.1 million in 2026 and runs through Aug. 31, 2031. He will owe a $4.12 million buyout to get out of the deal. In August, NU system president Ted Carter left to become the president of Ohio State.
In College Station, Alberts won't have a football move to make with Mike Elko settling in to his new position. On the gridiron, his job will be to support Elko as the Aggies look to move from the SEC's middle class to the upper echelon of college football's toughest league.
