Tackling the Spring Football Exhibition debate: Pros, cons, an opportunity for NIL funding? (spring games)

Hardly a new, trending topic, college football exhibitions – particularly those that could be played to coincide with spring camps – again are a percolating subject around the football world.

New Auburn coach Hugh Freeze, who shattered records for success at Liberty and earlier had revived the Ole Miss football program, has in his return to the Southeastern Conference brought the exhibition discussion to the forefront.

Freeze’s comments have been echoed by UAB’s Trent Dilfer, Troy’s Jon Sumrall and myriad others – including the ever-loquacious Deion ‘Coach Prime’ Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes.

Could Notre Dame, led by Marcus Freeman, have an easy logistical matchup with Lance Taylor and Western Michigan? The common bonds for the two former colleagues are many, and both staffs are full of former coworkers.

Team FootballScoop dives into the exhibition debate – with the NCAA’s current double-standard against college football primers that doesn’t exist in, say, baseball, basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and myriad other sports.

Also, Zach Barnett, Scott Roussel and John Brice shed insight as to what FootballScoop is hearing from coaches throughout college football – even as it pertains to the potential of scrimmage contests for Football Championship Subdivision programs, NCAA Division II teams and more.

Why couldn’t a spring exhibition, with some simple ground rules particularly as it pertains to the NCAA Transfer Portal, serve as a potential Name, Image and Likeness fundraiser for a school’s entire athletics department? What other options might exist?
