Jim McElwain will need a new offensive coordinator heading into his sixth season at Central Michigan.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Paul Petrino will not return to his role as the offensive coordinator with the Chippewas, and is close to landing a new opportunity elsewhere.
More details on that move to come.
Petrino, who also coached the program's receivers, spent the past two seasons at CMU calling the offense after a nine year run as the head coach at Idaho.
Over the last two decades, Petrino has led successful offenses at Louisville, Arkansas, and Illinois.
While dealing with injuries at key positions, most notably at quarterback, Central Michigan's offense struggled to gain traction, ranking 86th and 96th in scoring the past two seasons.
After making bowl games in his first two full seasons in Mount Pleasant, McElwain and the Chippewas have failed to reach bowl eligibility the past two seasons.
