Source: Penn State adding record-setting FCS head coach to staff (UAlbany)

This fall would have marked a dozen seasons at the helm of the UAlbany program for Greg Gattuso, but an opportunity in the Big Ten was too much to pass up.

Sources tell FootballScoop that the veteran FCS head coach is stepping down, and will be joining to the Penn State staff.

Johnny McGonigal and Rodger Wyland have also reported the same, adding that his role with the program will be as a defensive consultant.

At UAlbany, Gattuso led a massive improvement from 3-9 in 2022 to a remarkable 11-4 season that ended with the deepest playoff trip in the school's history in 2023, ending in the national semifinals.

This past fall, Gattuso and the Danes finished 4-8, with a number of losses by two scores or less.

Gattuso is a former star lineman for the Nittany Lions, helping lead the team to the national title in 1982, and joins the support staff being placed around new star defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who is fresh off helping Ohio State to a national title a few weeks ago.

Gattuso took over the head coaching job after a few seasons on staff under Randy Edsall at Maryland, where he ascended to the assistant head coach role before taking over the UAlbany program. The Danes were his second head coaching opportunity, the first being at Duquesne, where he went 97-32 over the course of 12 seasons.

He heads to Happy Valley with a 54-69 record at UAlbany, and a 151-101 mark overall as a head coach.
