Scottie Montgomery is a name many coaches will from his time on David Cutcliffe's staff.
After serving a few seasons before Cut's arrival at Duke, Montgomery coached the team's receivers, and stuck around after Cutcliffe took over the Blue Devils. He left to join the Steelers as their wide receivers coach for a few seasons before returning to Duke to serve as associate head coach / offensive coordinator for Cutcliffe from 2013-15.
He helped lead the Blue Devils to historic seasons during that stretch, going 10-4, 9-4, and then 8-5, which ultimately led to an opportunity to become a head coach at East Carolina.
There, he went 9-26 over a three-year span from 2016-18. From there he went back to the offensive coordinator role at Maryland for a few seasons before heading back to the NFL.
After spending the last two seasons with the Colts coaching their running backs, Montgomery is set to join Dan Campbell's staff in Detroit.
Tom Pelissero tweets today that Montgomery will be the Lions new assistant head coach / running backs coach.
The role opened up following the departure of Duce Staley, who left Detroit to join Frank Reich's staff with the Carolina Panthers.
