Karl Dorrell is adding three coaches to his new Colorado staff, including one from a Pac-12 rival.
According to the Boulder Daily Camera, Dorrell has plucked Demetrice Martin away from Arizona to coach the Buffaloes' defensive backs. Martin was the only one of Kevin Sumlin's defensive assistants retained from 2019 to '20, and promoted from cornerbacks coach to handling the entire secondary.
Arizona is set to open spring practice today.
Additionally, per the Daily Camera, Chris Wilson will coach CU's defensive line and Taylor Embree will coach the tight ends.
Wilson coached at Colorado from 2000-04, while Embree is the son of former CU head coach Jon Embree.
After coaching at Colorado, Wilson spent five years at Oklahoma, three as the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, one at Georgia, two at USC, three with the Philadelphia Eagles, and the 2019 campaign with the Arizona Cardinals.
Embree spent the past three seasons as a quality control assistant with the San Francisco 49ers.
Colorado will be the fifth Pac-12 school to employ Martin. In addition to CU and 'Zona, Martin coached defensive backs at UCLA and Washington and spent 2006-07 as a GA at USC.
The three new hires will join four assistants retained from Mel Tucker's staff -- Darrin Chiaverini (assistant head coach/WRs), Darian Hagan (RBs), Tyson Summers (defensive coordinator/safeties) and Brian Michalowski (outside linebackers) -- meaning Dorrell still has openings at quarterbacks, offensive line and inside linebackers on his initial CU staff.
