Terms on Dan Lanning's new deal at Oregon show a major commitment

Two evenings ago, word broke of Dan Lanning inking a new deal at Oregon after a successful debut 10-3 season with the Ducks.

The report shared that Lanning's salary would put him among the top 20 or so head coaches in college football after he earned $4.6 million last season.

Lanning was set to make $4.7 million this fall under his original deal, but the new deal put his salary at $7 million, John Conzano shared today.

Matt Prehm also shared another significant detail of the new deal, noting a very significant buyout for the Ducks leader.

According to Prehm, if Lanning were to leave at any point before the final game of the seventh year of his new deal that goes through the 2028 season, he would be on the hook to owe the school $20 million.

$20 million. That's a significant buyout figure.

There was a time not that long ago that coaches would think you're crazy for leaving a program like Oregon, but with the uncertainty of the Pac-12's future and after losing their last two head coaches to programs located in Florida, the landscape has changed and Oregon clearly wants to make sure Lanning is committed for the long haul, and this deal sure makes it appear that he's happy to provide that commitment.
