Colts reportedly targeting Shane Steichen for head coaching job

Typically, a team waiting until after the Super Bowl to fill their head coaching job is a good way to tell that their top candidate is coaching on the game's biggest stage.

That appears to be the case for the Colts.

According to a report today from Adam Schefter, the Eagles are targeting Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their new head coach.

For the Colts, it would mark the second straight time they've gone to Philly's offensive coordinator to fill their head coaching job, doing the same with Frank Reich back in 2018.

Schefter adds that Indy has been informing remaining candidates this morning that they are "moving in a different direction," and plan to hire Steichen if the two sides can reach an agreement on a contract.

NFL rules state that Steichen and the Colts can't formally agree to a deal until after the Super Bowl, and Schefter adds that the Colts want to meet this week to see if a deal can be completed.

Steichen has spent the last two seasons in Philly, and had a one-year stop as offensive coordinator with the Chargers prior to landing with Nick Sirianni's Eagles staff.

At both those stops, Steichen has done an impressive job molding the offense around young quarterbacks in Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert.

The hire would cap a rapid rise for Steichen, who is just 37. Outside of one year as an offensive assistant at Louisville, he's spent his entire coaching career in the NFL with stops in support roles with the Chargers and Browns before being elevated to quarterbacks coach for the Chargers in 2016. He took over as the interim offensive coordinator in 2019.

Now, just three seasons after taking the reigns as a play caller, Steichen looks to be landing a head coaching opportunity in the league.

With the hire, the Cardinals have the lone remaining head coaching opening in the NFL.
