Source: Chip Long will not return at Southern Miss (chip long)

Sources tell FootballScoop Chip Long will not return as the offensive coordinator at Southern Miss.

The 2024 campaign was Long's first, and now only, in Hattiesburg. He joined the program after spending 2023 as a quality control at Louisville.

Long rose to prominence as a young tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Arizona State from 2012-15. He followed Mike Norvell to Memphis in 2016 as his offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, and then a year later was in the same role at Notre Dame as Brian Kelly re-tooled his staff following a 4-8 season in 2016.

By year two, Long helped Notre Dame post an undefeated regular season and reach the College Football Playoff. He was let go following the 2019 campaign, and spent 2020 as an analyst at Tennessee before landing coordinator gigs at Tulane (2021) and Georgia Tech (2022).

Long was not expected to return to the staff after Southern Miss fired head coach Will Hall last month. The Golden Eagles are 1-8 on the season and fell 37-3 to Marshall on Saturday.

It marks the fifth offensive coordinator change of this year's cycle. Keep track of all the movement among FBS offensive play callers via our tracking page.
