Very few of us in this profession have a whole lot in common with Nick Saban, arguably the greatest college football coach of all time.
However, one common thread between the Crimson Tide's leader and many of us is the gift of fatherhood.
Saban, who is set to appear on the Pat McAfee show as a guest every Thursday, shared on the show over the weekend while in Tuscaloosa for their game against Texas a great story on one of those moments where coaching and fatherhood intersect.
While attending one of his son's middle school basketball games on the rare occasion where he wasn't on the road for recruiting, Saban watched his son lose his cool after being fouled hard into the wall on a breakaway layup.
"He gets up and says something to the guy and gets a technical foul," Saban recalls.
“I have this come-to-Jesus moment with him when we get home. I’m gonna teach him how to keep his cool and all that stuff. I give him like a 15-minute, the best speech ever about keeping your cool, don’t lose your cool, have your poise, and all of that. He sat there, looked at me and listened so intently."
"Then he said to me, 'How many headsets did you bust this year?"
Saban simply replied, "You've got me on that one."
