Update:Texas Tech has made the news official -- Kliff Kingsbury is out after six seasons at Texas Tech.
"I'd like to thank Kliff Kingsbury for his six years of dedication leading our football program," AD Kirby Hocutt said. "He's worked very hard and represented us in a first-class manner."
The school will discuss the move at a 3 p.m. ET press conference.
Texas Tech concluded its season with a 35-24 loss to Baylor, dropping the Red Raiders to 5-7 on the season after a 5-2 start. Texas Tech entered a similar win-or-stay-home game at Texas last season and emerged with a 27-23 win over the Longhorns, buying an extra year for Kliff Kingsbury and his staff, but the Red Raiders did not prevail in the same situation this year.
The 5-game slide puts Texas Tech at 35-40 in the 6-year Kingsbury era and 19-35 in Big 12 play.
Sources told FootballScoop that Kingsbury will meet with Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt later Sunday morning, with the expectation that Hocutt will inform his head coach that the program will make a change in direction moving forward.
If and when Texas Tech moves on from Kingsbury, he should become a valued commodity on the coaching market. The 39-year-old would have his choice of college offensive coordinator jobs or, considering the success the Air Raid is enjoying at the NFL level right now, Kingsbury could move to the NFL as a coordinator or quarterbacks coach. Should Kingsbury decide to move on to the NFL, there are a number of successful Texas Tech alums who could vouch for his success at that level.
As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
