Earlier this week Bob Stoops officially opened two positions on the offensive side of the ball when he announced that co-offensive coordinators Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell would not return.
Ever since, there has been plenty of buzz within the profession about who Stoops might bring in to interview for the vacancy. While there is no shortage of interest, sources tell us that Stoops seems to be bringing in young, bright offensive minds who play "fast football".
At this time, it is hard to rule out many of the likely candidates (Lincoln Riley, Tyson Helton, Jake Spavital, etc...); but some things have come to light. First, per sources, Sonny Cumbie (TCU co-offensive coordinator) did interview yesterday. Further, sources tell FootballScoop that Bob is interviewing a candidate today and will interview Garrick McGee tomorrow. There certainly could be additional interviews and undoubtedly he has spoken with others by now. Stoops made the decision to part ways with Heupel Saturday. He hasn't been sitting idly.
Regarding McGee, an internet report surfaced this afternoon claiming that McGee was the target of the search. We checked with a source who informed us that Bobby Petrino had called Stoops yesterday to recommend Garrick for the position. Sources tell us before that call McGee was not scheduled to interview.
Since we reported that, sources at Louisville have called to state that Stoops called to request permission to interview McGee and Petrino gave his consent.
This is a very important hire for the program and Stoops will be diligent; but he's also decisive and will make the hire once he believes he has found his man. There is no timetable for a hire; but this one feels like it will play out this weekend or on Monday.
As always, as more comes to light (and is reportable) we will keep you updated on The Scoop.
