After leading one of the top offense for one of the country's best Division II teams, Grand Valley State head coach Scott Wooster lost offensive coordinator Matt Vitzhum to an FCS opportunity at South Dakota where Vitzhum is now coaching the receivers.
As Wooster gets ready for his second year leading the program, this offensive coordinator hire was essentially his first major coordinator hire after inheriting a top-notch staff with his promotion from offensive line coach to head coach of the program prior to last season.
The Lakers announced their new offensive play caller yesterday, and it's a strong addition to the staff.
Former Hawaii co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ian Shoemaker is the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Wooster and GVSU.
Shoemaker spent the last two seasons at Hawaii and previously led one of the most prolific offensive attacks in college football while at Eastern Washington (FCS).
There, he mentored a two-time Walter Payton Award finalist and FCS National Player of the Year while averaging over 537 yards per game and just over 41 points per game.
Shoemaker also brings head coach experience at the Division II level, leading Central Washington from 2014-19 to a 45-20 mark with two Great Northwest conference championships.
At GVSU, he takes over an offense that ranked 5th in scoring offense and 10th in rushing offense, and among the top 25 in a number of other key statistics.
The Lakers finished the regular season ranked #2 nationally, and enter this fall with high expectations, as has become customary in Allendale.
