We all think we've seen it all, but every once in a while the game reminds us there's so much more for our eyes to witness.
The latest example came Thursday night in Frisco, Texas, where, yes, the cities 12 high schools play games inside the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility.
Here's the situation:
Wakeland led 56-52 when Lone Star hit a 23-yard touchdown pass on a perfectly placed ball in double coverage with 40 seconds left. Wakeland then answered by drilling a 43-yard field goal as time expired, forcing overtime. Their survival appeared short-lived, though.
In the top of the first overtime, Wakeland went for a 4th-and-goal from the 3-yard line. The called pass play wasn't there, so Wakeland quarterback Jayden Maples tucked it and ran but was stacked up a yard shy of the goal line.
Lone Star took the field in the bottom of the first overtime needing any type of score to win the game, and was in more than prime position with a 3rd-and-6 from the 9. Lone Star dialed up QB power to Karece Hoyt to either pick up the first down or set up the game-winning chip shot field goal. Hoyt charged forward to the seven, the six, disappeared into the pile as the pile drove toward first down yardage at the three... and then all of a sudden the ball emerged and it was moving, fast, the other way.
Wakeland defensive lineman Austin Wilson was credited with a 99-yard walk-off fumble recovery, but the actual return was closer to 103 yards. Fittingly, a defensive play for the ages swung the outcome in a game with a 65-59 final score.
You won’t see a more crazy finish to a football game…

The win snapped an 18-game district winning streak for Lone Star, in the most unlikely of ways possible. At least we think.
