Marques Hagans is a Virginia native, former University of Virginia standout football player and married to former Virginia women's basketball standout, Lauren Swierczek.
Hagans is, in essence, all-Cavalier.
Yet the former star quarterback for the Cavaliers also is a man in demand.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Hagans within the past week has emerged as a top candidate for prime staff positions in both the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference.
After Maryland, per sources, identified Hagans as a top target for its passing game coordinator position on the staff of head coach Mike Locksley and new offensive coordinator Dan Enos, an SEC opportunity developed. Hagans is believed to have passed on the Maryland position.
Per sources with direct knowledge, Hagans now is first-year South Carolina coach Shane Beamer's top choice for the Gamecocks' running backs coach.
The position was left vacant last week when veteran position coach Des Kitchings landed an opportunity with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, after initially being among the few holdovers of Beamer's inaugural South Carolina staff.
Hagans has roughly a decade on staff at his alma mater, including each year of the Bronco Mendenhall era. Though he played quarterback for the Cavaliers in the early-2000s, Hagans has emerged as a gifted developer of wide receivers.
Additionally, with his background in the game at quarterback, both in college and professionally, and with his graduate assistant work, Hagans also has emerged as a versatile offensive coach.
The Gamecocks under Beamer have upped their assistant coaches' salary pool as Beamer has navigated a lengthy transition in assembling his first-year staff.
However, Hagans, as noted, is a Cavaliers legend and someone Mendenhall & Co. are motivated to retain, if possible.
With the second signing period opening Wednesday, a decision is expected as soon as perhaps the next 24 hours on Hagans' future plans.
