Sources: Tennessee Tech hiring defensive coordinator with deep ACC ties (Bobby Wilder)

Back in the head coach's chair following some time away from college football, Bobby Wilder is making a major move at Tennessee Tech for his defensive coordinator position.

Wilder, the former Old Dominion head coach who was hired in this cycle to rebuild the Tennessee Tech program, is snagging former Gardner-Webb co-defensive coordinator Greg Jones to run TTU's defense, sources tell FootballScoop.

In addition to being a key part of Gardner-Webb's recent success, Jones also has deep ACC ties from his time at Wake Forest where he worked under head coach Dave Clawson and former Demon Deacons defensive coordinator Mike Elko.

Jones showed his coaching versatility at Wake, working in various positions on both the offensive and defensive staffs.

But it's his working knowledge of Elko's defensive systems and ability to maintain the 4-2-5 defense Wilder wants the Golden Eagles to continue that make him a natural fit at Tech.

Jones, like Wilder, has experience at Old Dominion and he's also coached at Cornell, in addition to other stops along his coaching career.

Tennessee Tech opens its 2024 season with a brutal task: it plays at MTSU Aug. 31 and then a week later faces a brutal road tilt at Kirby Smart’s SEC powerhouse Georgia program.
