Andy Avalos will be the new defensive coordinator at Oregon, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday.
Avalaos is presently the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Boise State, his alma mater. Avalos spent a total of 12 years as a Bronco: four as a player, two as defensive line coach and six as linebackers coach, the last four as defensive coordinator.
At Oregon, Avalos replaces Jim Leavitt, who left the program after two seasons earlier this month.
Avalos helped Boise State go 40-13 in his four years as the Broncos' defensive coordinator, including one Mountain West championship and at least a share of three MW Mountain Division championship. He is primarily responsible for developing Leighton Vander Esch from an 8-man football player into MW Defensive Player of the Year and a first-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys.
He inherits a defense that finished No. 42 nationally in yards per play and No. 48 in scoring. Oregon went 9-4 in 2018, the program's first full season under head coach Mario Cristobal. The Ducks are set to return eight starters and signed 5-star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, the highest-ranked defensive recruit headed to Oregon in the modern recruiting era.
Avalos made $355,000 as Boise State's defensive coordinator in 2018, while Leavitt was the Pac-12's highest-paid assistant coach at $1.7 million.
