Brenten Wimberly, who’s spent time at both Georgia Tech and most recently Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide staff on the defensive side of the ball, is poised for his first Football Bowls Subdivision on-field assistant coaching position.
Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Wimberly, a Georgia native who starred in college at Football Championship Subdivision power Kennesaw State, helping the Owls to the FCS Playoffs as a player and graduate assistant, is joining the Navy staff of newly promoted head coach Brian Newberry.
Wimberly is going to help coach Navy's secondary, per sources.
It’s a continued reunion of multiple staffers from those Kennesaw State teams that set numerous school records for both wins, playoff appearances and on-field stats.
Wimberly played under Newberry when Newberry coordinated the Owls’ defenses from 2015-18.
Wimberly then logged time as a defensive graduate assistant coach at Georgia Tech before he spent the 2022 season on the staff of Saban and Tide defensive coordinator Pete Golding.
A former linebacker, Wimberly has worked closely at the collegiate level with defensive players on the second and third levels.
Alabama just capped its 2022 season with a resounding win against Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl.
Navy will make its debut under the leadership of Newberry, tabbed to replace the fired Ken Niumatalolo last month, Aug. 26, in Dublin, Ireland, where the Midshipmen will face Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame squad.
