New Kansas coach Lance Leipold's staff is going to feature a solid mix of holdovers from the Jayhawks' last staff iteration.
Sources tell FootballScoop on Monday evening that Leipold is expected to retain Jacob Schoonover as special teams coordinator, as well as also retaining multiple members of the Kansas offensive staff.
Per sources, Leipold is expected or working to retain Emmett Jones, who was interim coach after the school ousted former head coach Les Miles and dismissed athletics director Jeff Long; additionally, Leipold is working to keep on staff running backs coach Jonathan Wallace.
Defensively, sources indicated the Jayhawks are likely to retain defensive run game coordinator Kwahn Drake, also the team's defensive line coach, and defensive backs coach Chevis Jackson.
Joshua Eargle, on staff at Kansas since 2019, could potentially find a spot as an offensive analyst with Leipold's Jayhawks staff, per sources.
The future is less clear for other notable KU staffers, including the recently hired offensive coordinator Mike DeBord and defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot.
DeBord was hired earlier this year and received a guaranteed, two-year contract worth approximately $1.2 million. Eliot was hired away from Colorado by Miles in December 2018.
Leipold was hired on Friday to help revive a moribund Kansas program. He developed a reputation as a staunch program builder and rebuilder after leading Wisconsin-Whitewater to six NCAA Division III national titles and most recently helped guide Buffalo to some of that program's most notable successes.
He is expected to bring with him to Lawrence, Kansas, approximately seven assistants from his Buffalo staff, per an earlier report.
