Sacramento State in discussions to hire Michael Vick (Updated) (Sacramento State Football)

After it was reported earlier Monday that Norfolk State interviewed Michael Vick for their head coaching opening, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday afternoon that Sacramento State is in discussions to hire the former Virginia Tech and NFL quarterback.

Sacramento State has spent the fall boasting about its plans to one day join the Pac-12. The school and its allies claimed back in October that it raised $35 million in NIL funds in one day, and that fund has reportedly added another $15 million in the two months since.

Vick, who has no formal coaching experience, would be supported by an "experienced" staff of assistants, per Schefter.

Vick took Virginia Tech to the 1999 national championship game, was the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NFL draft, is statistically the best running quarterback in NFL history, and sits on the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, but it's not clear what his qualifications are to run a Division I football program.

“I know how to lead and I know what it takes," Vick told the Virginian-Pilot

Deion Sanders has open doors for former NFL stars to skip the line and jump straight into FCS head coaching positions. Eddie George, who also lacked formal coaching experience prior to taking the Tennessee State job in 2021, took the Tigers to the FCS playoffs this season. He was named the Big South-OVC Coach of the Year. Ed Reed also nearly agreed to take the Bethune-Cookman last year.

Update: Well, its complicated. We'll see...
