Reports: Kirk Ferentz and an Iowa assistant suspended for season opener (Iowa)

For the second season in a row a Big Ten head coach will be suspended for the season opener.

According to multiple reports, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz will serve a suspension for their season opener for a recruiting violation.

247 shares that the suspension is due to the recruitment of starting quarterback Cade McNamara, who started his career at Michigan before transferring to Iowa. He missed much of last season with a knee injury.

Wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr will also be suspended for the same game for a recruiting violation.

Both coaches will miss the August 31st game against Illinois State, and are set to return for their Week 2 game against in-state rival Iowa State.

Earlier this summer, Iowa also self-reported a level-III rules violation related to current Alabama offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor.

Ferentz is the longest tenured coach in college football as he enters his 26th season with the Hawkeyes this fall.

Update >> Iowa has shared a statement sharing that the violations occurred in late 2022, and in addition to the one game suspension, they will also lose one week of off campus recruiting.

Seth Wallace, who was elevated to assistant head coach back in January in addition to his assistant defensive coordinator / linebacker duties, will serve as acting head coach for the opener.
