According to a report this morning from Brett McMurphy, one of the feel-good teams and stories of the 2020 football season may be left out of bowl season.
McMurphy shares that Hugh Freeze and Liberty (who is an Independent) may not receive a bowl bid because they don't have guaranteed bowl tie-in and that without any win requirements for teams to be bowl eligibly this year, bowl are expected to fill their games with their designated conference affiliations.
Freeze has led the Flames to a 9-1 mark in 2020 with victories over Power Five programs Syracuse and Virginia Tech with their lone loss coming to NC State in a tight 15-14 decision. The Flames cracked the top 25 for the first time in school history back in November, and have stayed in it since.
This weekend, in a match up of premier Group of Five programs ranked in the top 25, Coastal Carolina is making their case for hosting College GameDay when Liberty visits this weekend in their season finale. Jamey Chadwell and his squad are currently ranked #14.
Whether they improve to 10-1 or lost to Coastal to drop to 9-2 this weekend, it would be an absolute shame if Freeze and his crew aren't rewarded with a bowl bid during this special season in favor of a sub-500 Power Five program strictly based on the bowl's conference affiliation.
Last season, in his first year with the program and the team's first as a full-fledged FBS member eligible for post season play, Freeze led the Flames to an 8-5 mark and a win in the Cure Bowl over Goergia Southern.
