Patriots will reportedly tab Jerod Mayo to succeed Bill Belichick (Bill Belichick)

After announcing the departure of Bill Belichick yesterday, the Patriots didn't have to look far for their new head coach.

According to Adam Schefter this morning, inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo will be the new head coach of the franchise.

Mayo spent his entire professional football career with New England. Drafted 10th overall in the 2008 out of Tennessee, he played eight years for the Patriots and has coached the team's inside linebackers for the last five seasons.

At 37 years old, he will become the league's youngest head coach.

Yesterday, Ian Rapoport shared that Mayo and the Patriots established a firm succession plan via his contract, and that was communicated to the NFL, so the Patriots could simply hire him without having to go through the customary, lengthy process.

Mayo will be formally announced at a presser next week, Schefter adds.
