Dan Hunt, who spent more than the past quarter-century at Colgate, including as the program's head coach since 2014, abruptly resigned from his post Monday afternoon, the school announced.
In its release, Colgate said:
“Dan Hunt has stepped down from the position of Head Football Coach to address personal issues, following the discovery of violation of university policy not involving students. The matter was reviewed by leadership in the Department of Athletics with the support of University administration and members of the Board of Trustees.”
Stan Dakosty, Colgate's associate head football coach since 2017 and on staff with the Raiders since 2007, has been tabbed as interim coach for the fall 2021 season.
In his time atop the Raiders' helm, Hunt transformed the program into the class of the Patriot League.
Colgate captured outright or shared Patriot League titles in 2015-17-18. The program played only a two-game spring season this year, both losses to Lafayette and Fordham.
Hunt finished his six-plus seasons atop the program with a 27-11 mark in Patriot League play, including a record-setting 10-win campaign in 2018.
“I appreciate Dan's years of work recruiting and developing excellent student-athletes for the Colgate football program,” said Dr. Nicki Moore, the school's vice president and director of athletics, in the release. “I'm proud of the academic and athletic successes achieved under (Hunt's) leadership.”
Dakosty is a 2005 Colgate graduate who began his coaching career as an undergraduate on the Raiders' staff.
Dakosty helped coach tight ends early in his career including for the Raiders' squad that finished 15-1 and Football Championship Subdivision runner-up in 2004.
The Raiders are scheduled to open their fall campaign at Boston College Sept. 4.
