Every once in a while an idea comes along that makes many wonder, "Why weren't we doing this a long time ago?"
Today, one of those ideas came to life as information from a NFL Player's Association survey came to light where the NFLPA asked players to rate the coordinators they like to play for.
The top vote getter among all coordinators was Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who has been a name mentioned for a number of NFL head coaching openings the last several season and whose stock has fast been on the rise as the Lions defense continues to play impressively.
Here's how the top five at each coordinator spot shook out.
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
- Frank Smith (Dolphins)
- Thomas Brown (Panthers)
- Brian Schottenheimer (Cowboys)
- Brian Callahan (Bengals)
- Kellen Moore (Chargers)
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR
- Aaron Glenn (Lions)
- Steve Wilks (Cardinals)
- Dan Quinn (Cowboys)
- Brian Flores (Vikings)
- Raheem Morris (Rams)
SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR
- John Fassel (Cowboys)
- Chris Tabor (Panthers)
- Matt Daniels (Vikings)
- Dave Fipp (Lions)
- Darren Rizzi (Saints)
A tip of the cap deservedly goes to Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy for having all three coordinators on the list.
One could certainly say that their 11-5 record and first place standing in the NFC East play into that, but it's worth noting that coaches from the Chargers and Panthers also appear on the list, and they're part of organizations who decided change was necessary mid-seasson.
While the NFL has done a number of things over the years to help minority hires at the head coach and front office jobs, this seems like the most common sense, and is long overdue. Hopefully it will help deserving candidates of every background get the shot they deserve.
