Matt Viator reportedly returning to lead McNeese State (ULM)

Matt Viator is a name that fans of McNeese football will immediately recognize.

The former head coach of the Cowboys from 2006-15 is reportedly set to return to lead the program, according to a report from Ross Dellenger today.

Viator made an immediate impact at McNeese State after being elevated from offensive coordinator to head coach heading into the 2006 season.

He led the program to conference titles and the FCS playoffs in three of his first four seasons, going on to finish no lower than fourth in the Southland Conference over the next several seasons before a 10-3 campaign in 2013.

After a 10-1 season in 2015, Viator made the jump to the FBS level, taking the ULM job.

He lasted five seasons leading the Warhawks before being let go after an 0-10 campaign in 2020.

The last several seasons he has been at Louisiana in a quality control capacity.

Eight days ago, when McNeese AD Heath Schroyer announced the program was parting ways with Gary Goff, he proclaimed that McNeese should be a place that competes for conference titles and national relevance.

What better way to do that than to bring a former head coach back that did just that during his time leading the program?

Viator steps back into the familiar role after Goff, who went 22-3 as a Division II head coach at Valdosta State, went just 10-23 in three seasons on the job.
