Kansas announced late Monday night that they reached a mutual agreement with Les Miles to part ways.
The school announced the decision in a statement.
The move comes just a few days after Kansas placed Miles on administrative leave following findings from an investigation done that found inappropriate behavior during his time at LSU.
The statement from athletic director Jeff Long makes no mention to the allegations of inappropriate behavior, but does mention: "We need to win football games."
“I am extremely disappointed for our university, fans and everyone involved with our football program. There is a lot of young talent on this football team, and I have no doubt we will identify the right individual to lead this program. We will begin the search for a new head coach immediately with an outside firm to assist in this process. We need to win football games, and that is exactly what we’re going to do.”
Statement from Miles:
“This is certainly a difficult day for me and for my family. I love this university and the young men in our football program. I have truly enjoyed being the head coach at KU and know that it is in a better place now than when I arrived. To our student-athletes, I want you to remember that you came to play for KU and earn a degree here. So, I implore you to stay and build on what we started and do all of the things we talked about doing together. There is a bright future for all of you and for KU Football.”
Newly hired offensive coordinator Mike DeBord will take over as acting head coach until an interim head coach is determined, the school shared.
When the findings from LSU came to light, it was shared that back in 2013, then athletic director Joe Alleva wanted to fire Les and he believed at the time he could do it for cause and not pay his buyout. However, Miles ultimately stayed in charge of the Tigers until 2016.
Miles went 3-18 in two seasons at Kansas. If this ends up being the 67 year old's last head coaching stop his career record as a head coach at Oklahoma State, LSU and Kansas was 145-73 overall with one national title (2007).
Where Kansas decides to go from here will be intriguing. With it being March, with Spring ball right around the corner, do they go with an interim hire for the fall season, or will (what many consider the toughest job among the Power Five) make a hire during at a time in the hiring cycle where it would be really tough to build a quality staff.
