FBS coach makes unprecedented move suspending players after loss (Charlotte)

Little more than three months ago, Biff Poggi was Charlotte's bombastic and, most importantly, still-undefeated head football coach.

So Poggi seemed to feel pretty good about things when he cautioned American Athletic Conference media members they would regret having asked Poggi only three questions at league media days in late-July.

But Poggi hadn't lost six of his first eight games as a head coach at that time, and he hadn't made what already has resonated as an unorthodox -- many other adjectives fit -- move to suspend players after the 49ers' latest blowout-loss.

Charlotte was blasted, 38-16, Friday night by FAU, and, essentially, Poggi didn't like his team's behavior.

"I am extremely disappointed with our comportment as a football team against FAU," Poggi said in a statement. "I have made the decision to immediately suspend various players for our game against Tulsa."

Neither Poggi nor Charlotte, which posted news of the suspensions on the school's official athletics Web site, provided any specifics; it is not known how many players or which players are being suspended for the 49ers' upcoming trip to Tulsa, which is 3-5 under first-year coach Kevin Wilson.

Charlotte tabbed Poggi to run its program after it dismissed Will Healy last season. At the time, Poggi was a full-time staffer for Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan, which also has come under intense scrutiny and investigation this month for the Wolverines's allegedly unprecedented coordinated sign-stealing spying scheme.

It's worth remembering: Charlotte officials made the roll-of-the-dice move to hire the inexperienced, unproven Poggi at a time that the school's interview process also had zeroed in on Barry Odom, a well-regarded defensive mind who had previous head coaching experience in the Southeastern Conference.

UNLV quickly hired Odom, and the Runnin' Rebels already have become bowl eligible with six wins in their first seven games.
