Let's start this off by admitting this was not a fair fight. Texas A&M-Commerce is in the Lone Star Conference of Division II. East Texas Baptist is a member of Division III's American Southwest Conference. Beyond that, A&M-Commerce is one of Division II's most talented teams, at least on offense. They're quarterbacked by Tyrik Rollison, originally rated as one of the top 15 players in America for the class of 2010 by Rivals.com and signed with Auburn out of high school. He's since transferred to Sam Houston State, then to Tyler Junior College, and then finally to Texas A&M-Commerce.
So it makes total sense that Rollison would complete 26-of-33 passes for 562 yards and six touchdowns in leading the Lions to a 98-20 win over East Texas Baptist.
Ninety-eight points. A&M-Commerce led 31-6 through one quarter, 57-20 at the half, 78-20 after three, and scored their 98th point with 3:44 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Needless to say, it's a school and Lone Star Conference record.
On top of that, A&M-Commerce legitimately should have scored 100. Kicker Saul Martinez missed one of his 12 extra point attempts - 12 extra point attempts! - and had another try botched to the point where Martinez had to grab the ball and head toward the end zone (he failed).
Six Lions rushers combined for 45 carries for 405 yards and seven touchdowns. One of those runners was Joe Bergeron, as in former Texas Longhorn Joe Bergeron, who carried 13 times for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Again, this wasn't a fair fight.
The Lions limited East Texas Baptist to 32 rushing yards on 44 carries, including six sacks. Tigers quarterback got his yards though, connecting on 26-of-41 attempts for 359 yards and three touchdowns.
Perhaps the most mind-boggling stat of the night: there were a total of 39 possessions in this game. Twenty-three of them last less than 90 seconds, and only three lasted longer than 2:56. Somehow, the game lasted only three hours and twenty-three minutes.
Thankfully, Texas A&M-Commerce jumps up a weight class next week, taking on Stephen F. Austin of FCS.
Also, I'd say that staff noodling trip head coach Colby Carthel took his bunch on last month did the trick.
