Contract details for new Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos (Boise State)

Earlier this week, we shared that sources had shared with us that Boise State defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Andy Avalos was leaving to become the new defensive coordinator at Oregon.

According to 247, Oregon released the details of the Ducks new coordinator today. Avalos, who called the defense the past three seasons at Boise State, is set to make $2.45 million over the next three seasons - $765k in 2019, $815k in 2020 and $865k in 2021. That averages about $816k per year.

Veteran defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt, Avalos' predecessor in Eugene, was making $1.7 million annually. The most recent look at assistant coaching salaries by USA Today put Leavitt as the 6th highest paid defensive coordinator in college football. After stepping back a few weeks back, Leavitt collected a buyout of $2.5 million from Oregon, 247 adds.

In the event that Avalos is let go before his contract is up, his contract says that he's due 70% of the remaining contract value, and if head coach Mario Cristobal were to leave for another position, Avalos would be owed 70% of his remaining salary for 12 months or until the end of the contract.

If Avalos were to leave Oregon for another position, he'd owe the Ducks 20% of the guaranteed salary of his contract, with the buyout offset only if he were to leave to take an FBS head coaching job.

The Ducks have just under two weeks before kicking of spring practices, so Avalos and the defensive staff - who will also be breaking in outside linebackers coach Ken Wilson from Washington State on the defensive side of the ball after the departure of Cort Denison to become the defensive coordinator at Louisville - will have a lot to get on the same page about before then.
