2018 Changes
The on-the-field staff remains intact, though a major change has occurred off the field. Jerry Schmidt left Oklahoma after 19 years on staff to take the same job at Texas A&M. Riley hired former Texas Tech and Texas head strength coach Bennie Wylie to replace him.
There was speculation free flowing from local reports following the Rose Bowl loss that Riley would make changes on his defensive staff, but Riley publicly backed Stoops and the rest of the defensive assistants. "Mike is a really good coach," Riley told The Oklahoman. "I have a lot of confidence in him as I do our whole staff. To do what this staff and this program did this year with all the changes and all that, it’s unprecedented. People better remember that too."
Tenth Assistant
No action has been taken on the 10th assistant as of yet. There is chatter in the profession that Riley could offer the 10th spot to his brother, Garrett Riley, who currently serves as quarterbacks coach at Kansas. He was with Lincoln at East Carolina for three seasons and, obviously, for 13 years before that in the Riley home. Nothing is confirmed at this time.
