The New York Jets will be shopping, again, for a head coach this winter. The most accomplished head coach in NFL history is a free agent -- a coach that happens to have extensive ties to the franchise.
In a world where Bobby Petrino is currently a celebrated employee of the University of Arkansas, is it so crazy that Bill Belichick could once again be the HC of the NYJ?
Yes, it appears. It is crazy.
"I'm not a big Jets fan, in case you don't know that. I like Fireman Ed, but that's it," Belichick said during an appearance with Peyton and Eli Manning during Monday night's Bills-Jets game. "Coach Saleh did a good job with that program. He brought in a culture, a level of toughness and competitiveness... I thought Coach Saleh really did a good job with this team. They're probably not that far away from winning."
Peyton then pointed out that the Jets would have moved into first place in the AFC East with a win over Buffalo on Monday night. "It seemed quite early to me to be making a head coaching change," Manning said.
"That's kind of what it's been there with the Jets," Belichick replied. "Barely won over 30 percent in the last 10 years. So, you know, the owner being the owner: Ready, fire, aim."
As pointed out here following Saleh's firing, only two coaches have exited the franchise with winning records since its 1960 founding, six of the seven since Woody Johnson purchased the team in 2000. The two exceptions are Bill Parcells, who went 29-19 from 1997-99, and Al Groh, who went 9-7 in 2000. The Jets employed a coach between Parcells and Groh, of course, and his name was Belichick. He famously resigned on a napkin after one day on the job to take the Patriots job. It's safe to say the Jets never recovered from that decision.

If there was an opportunity of Johnson back-channeling to Belichick in the coming weeks, Belichick torpedoed that on Monday nihgt.
