With the Super Bowl now officially in the rearview mirror, we're entering a depressing part of the year where we won't see football on our TVs again for over 200 days.
Leading up to the NFL Draft in April, Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay will fill some time talking about hand measurements, arm talent, and Wonderlic scores and that will provide a brief reprieve by giving us a small dose of football in its own unique way.
But if we're being honest with ourselves, while it may temporarily scratch the itch, it's not remotely the same.
Spring is also a time college coaches hit the road for recruiting, and to build relationships with high school coaches, and that brings to me to this gem we came across recently.
It seems McKinney HS (TX), who has developed a number of FBS players over the years, is among the high school programs with a brilliant new addition to their football facility.
The concept is simply enough, and is clearly aimed at making the life of college coaches easier, who are there hoping to capture the measurables of high school prospects.
With vertical measurements for height, and horizontal measurements to capture wingspan, plus what appears to be a spot in the lower right for a hand measurement (a feature sure to send Kiper into a tizzy), it's an innovative addition a lot of high schools would be smart to add.
Doing so would not only score some major points with college coaches coming through, but it would eliminate the awkward photo shoot session of college coach standing next to high school kid so they can take it back to their recruiting and personnel department to try and guess measurements.
Head coach Nate Leonard tweeted about the new addition to the facility earlier this month, sharing the following message with college coaches set to swing through:
College Coaches…Our new recruiting measurement board is right outside my office, so the next time y’all swing by you won’t have to question height off the sheet, you’ll be able to see it for yourself!
As part of their recruiting spotlight social media initiative, head coach Nate Leonard and the McKinney program show how they fully utilize the board.
