In seven seasons as a head coach that includes four seasons at Ohio and three seasons and an NAIA national title at Northwestern Oklahoma State in the late 90's Tim Albin had just one losing season to his name prior to this his first season as the head coach at Charlotte, and that was in his first season as an FBS head coach leading the Bobcats in 2021 when they finished 3-9.
Hired to turn around Charlotte in December of 2024, Albin completed his first season leading the American Conference program with a 1-11 record this fall.
After a year struggling defensively, and following the departure of co-defensive coordinator / defensive line coach Kurt Mattix to return to Ohio as the Bobcats new defensive coordinator under first-year head coach John Hauser, Albin is filling the opening on his staff with a veteran defensive coach.
Sources tell FootballScoop Vic Cabral is joining the staff as the team's new defensive ends coach.
Cabral previously coached the outside linebackers at West Virginia for a season, and prior to that was on staff at Appalachian State as their defensive line coach for a season where they finished 9-5 and winners of the Sun Belt East. In his lone season at App State, the defense showed improvement in nearly every key defensive statistic.
Perhaps best known for spending 11 seasons in three different stints with the Georgia Southern program, Cabral is a former standout defensive lineman and team captain who played at Georgia Southern from 2000-2004.
In addition to his on-field coaching roles that also include stops at Georgia Military College and Samford (FCS - AL), Cabral has spent time in support staff roles as director of player personnel at Georgia Southern as well.
Cabral will work alongside defensive tackles coach Vince Reynolds to mentor the defensive line.
The pair of coaches up front will be charged with transforming a unit up front that finished 131st nationally out of 136 teams in run defense, and near the bottom of college football at 126th in both tackles for loss and sacks.
You know the drill. Stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
