Source: Davidson set to land rising coordinator to turn around defense (Featured)

In a young career that has taken him across the country Woody Blevins has managed to develop a reputation as one of the top young coordinators in college football.

Now Blevins is set to join the staff of another young rising star in the profession.

Sources tell FootballScoop that after weighing a number of opportunities following a standout debut season leading the defense at West Georgia (FCS), Blevins is set to accept the defensive coordinator role on Saj Thakkar's staff at Davidson (FCS - NC).

In his first season calling the defense for Joel Taylor at West Georgia (FCS), Blevins made an immediate impact in orchestrating a defense that ranked among the top 25 in seven different defensive categories while finishing the season 8-3.

Blevins joined the UWG staff following a five-year run as the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Assumption (D-II - MA), where they had historic success on defense, ranking among the top 15 nationally in nearly a dozen different defensive categories, including yards per play, third down efficiency, rush defense, interceptions, red zone defense, and pass efficiency defense among a host of other metrics.

Past stops for Blevins include a stint at Hawaii under Nick Rolovich, where he carried the defensive analyst title while working with the program's defensive backs, and he spent seven seasons at Northern Colorado, where he eventually took over the secondary after starting off as a defensive assistant, and rose to special teams coordinator by the 2019 season. At Northern Colorado (FCS) in 2014 his unit ranked 8th nationally in interceptions.

Sources share that Blevins had a number of FCS coordinator opportunities, and at least one offer to join the FBS ranks a a defensive backs coach, but despite those opportunities, has chosen to combine forces with Thakkar, who at 34 years old is among the youngest coaches in Division I college football.

Thakkar, spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Bentley (D-II - MA) as the head coach of the Falcons, going 6-4 and then 8-2 before landing the head coaching job at Davidson.

In his debut season at the Pioneer League program, Thakkar and the Wildcats went 2-10, with one of those wins coming at home over a top 25 ranked Presbyterian team that enjoyed a breakout season.

After giving up nearly 40 points a game last season, including 51, 55 and 72 in their first three games of the 2025 season, the addition of Blevins marks a major step for the program as the program looks to make continued progress under Thakkar's leadership.
