Already, Larry Knight's worked for some notable coaches in a 15-year career that traces to his early days as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Cincinnati.
Now, the former Bearcats, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Tennessee Vols staffer, among other stops, is poised to join the staff of another college coaching staple: Rich Rodriguez.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Knight is departing the Arkansas State program of Butch Jones to join RichRod's West Virginia Mountaineers organization in Rodriguez's second stint atop West Virginia. Knight will assist with coaching the Mountaineers defensive line.
A former Central Michigan player who nabbed All-Mid American Conference honors as a senior, Knight has also coached at his alma mater, as well as multiple stints under different head coaches at Temple University.
He's worked with linebackers, defensive ends, been a recruiting coordinator and a running game coordinator in his coaching journey, which also includes two seasons at Georgia State after exiting the University of Tennessee program that at that time also was coached by Jones, a consistent mentor in Knight's career.
Rodriguez is coming off a 4-8 2025 season in his return to West Virginia, where he replaced the fired Neal Brown. He's made multiple changes to the Mountaineers staff on both sides of the ball in the six weeks since the season concluded.
West Virginia is set to open Year 2, Part II under Rodriguez Sept. 5, 2026, at home against Coastal Carolina, which will be guided by first-year coach Ryan Beard. After a home game the next week against Jason Simpson's UT-Martin Skyhawks, a Football Championship Subdivision program, the Mountaineers face regional rival Virginia in a neutral-site game at Charlotte, North Carolina's Bank of America Stadium, home to the NFL's Carolina Panthers.
