Bill O'Brien tabbing veteran Ted Roof as new Boston College defensive coordinator (Boston College)

Ted Roof and Bill O'Brien previously worked with each other at Penn State, where O'Brien was tabbed to lead the program and Roof served as his defensive coordinator in 2012.

Now the two are set for a reunion.

CBS Sports shares that Roof is expected to join O'Brien's staff at Boston College as his new defensive coordinator.

Roof's most recent stop was at UCF in 2024, when he served as defensive coordinator.

The veteran defensive play caller has served as a defensive coordinator at thirteen different stops in a career that spans back to the late 80's.

After starting his career as a graduate assistant at Alabama in 1987, Roof coached linebackers at West Georgia, Duke and UMass before his first defensive coordinator opportunity in 1995 with the Minutemen.

He would go on to call defenses at Western Carolina, Georgia Tech and Duke before being tabbed the new head coach of the Blue Devils in 2004. He led the program for four full seasons, going 2-9, and then 1-10 before an 0-12 season and then a 1-11 campaign, before he was eventually dismissed with a 6-45 record.

Roof went on to land coordinator opportunities in the Big Ten at Minnesota and Penn State, in the SEC at Auburn, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, and in the ACC at programs like Georgia Tech (twice) and NC State with additional stops at UCF (twice) and Appalachian State.

While in his first stop calling the defense at Georgia Tech in 2000, Roof was nominated for the Broyles Award after his defense finished 12th nationally in rushing defense and among the top 20 nationally in scoring defense.

At Boston College, he's set to replace Tim Lewis who had just wrapped up his second season leading the defense for O'Brien. This past season, during a disappointing 2-10 campaign, Lewis' unit ranked 123rd out of 136 FBS teams in scoring defense, allowing nearly 33 points per game. They also ranked near the bottom nationally in rush defense (107th), Pass defense (125th nationally) and total defense (129th), allowing over 430 yards per contest.

Boston College also ranked near the bottom of college football nationally in sacks (1.42 per game), tackles per loss (3.83 per game), turnover margin (121st nationally) this season under Lewis.

Athletic director Blake James made the announcement at the conclusion of the season that O'Brien would come back for a third season at the helm, and he enters that critical third season with a 9-16 record.
