Sean Brophy -- 2025 FootballScoop Quarterbacks Coach of the Year (Sean Brophy)

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Sean Brophy (North Texas) is the 2025 FootballScoop Quarterbacks Coach of the Year, presented by Teamworks as selected by prior winners.

Drew Mestemaker was one of the feel-good stories of the 2024-25 bowl season. After Chandler Morris transferred to Virginia, for North Texas's appearance opposite Texas State in the First Responder Bowl, the Mean Green started an unknown walk-on true freshman who last started at game for Austin's Vandegrift High School... on the freshmen B team. North Texas lost the game, but Mestemaker put up the most yards of any player in a bowl game, throwing for 393 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Mestemaker graduated from bowl-season curiosity in 2024 to a full-fledged difference maker in 2025. As a redshirt freshman this fall, he was one of the best quarterbacks in college football.

Mestemaker piloted arguably the most dangerous offense in college football, leading the nation in passing with 4,129 yards on 292-of-416 passing with 31 touchdowns against seven interceptions.

While his 317.6 yards per game leads the nation, Mestemaker succeeds not because he throws the ball more than everyone else. His 70.2 percent completion rate is 10th among FBS quarterbacks, and first among the 14 players with at least 400 attempts on the season. Furthermore, Mestemaker leads the nation at 9.9 yards per attempt -- and among the 14 signal callers with at least 400 attempts to date this season, no other player averages more than 8.4 per attempt. Mestemaker is two off the national lead with 31 touchdowns, and his 174.78 efficiency rating trails only Heisman Trophy finalists Fernando Mendoza of Indiana and Julian Sayin of Ohio State.

As a team, North Texas leads the nation in completions of 10-plus yards (160), 20-plus yards (65), and gains of 50 yards and beyond (11).

A trip through Mestemaker's season is a tale of defensive coordinators left tormented. He posted seven games of at least two touchdown passes and no interceptions, led by two games of four touchdowns and no picks. He opened the year by throwing for 329 yards and three scores on 32 attempts in a 51-0 blowout of Lamar, and then went to eventual MAC champion Western Michigan and led an overtime win by throwing for 224 yards and two touchdowns against no interceptions.

During UNT's 6-game win streak from mid-October through the end of November, Mestemaker was a cumulative 135-of-180 (75 percent) for 2,252 yards (12.5 per attempt) with 16 touchdowns and one interception. That included a school and American Conference record 608-yard game in a 54-20 win at Charlotte. Frankly, Mestemaker could have had multiple 500- and even 600-yard games, but that many attempts simply were not necessary for the Mean Green to put opponents away. He needed only 25 attempts to drop 298 yards on UAB, 23 tries to put 469 on Rice, and just 24 passes for 366 yards in a win over Temple. North Texas won those games 53-24, 56-24, and 52-25.

North Texas heads into bowl season leading the nation in yards (504.3) and points (44.8) per game, while ranking second at 7.33 yards per play. The 11-2 record stands as the best in school history, while Mestemaker set a school record for single-season passing yards, completion percentage, total offense, and yards per play. As a team, North Texas gained more yards and scored more points than any in school history.

The American Conference Offensive Player of the Year and the Dave Campbell's Texas Football Offensive Player of the Year, Mestemaker also became the first player in Mean Green history to win a national individual award, taking home the Burlsworth Trophy as the nation's best player who began his career as a walk-on. He is also a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Award as the nation's top freshman.

Brophy's college journey started at Glendale (Ariz.) Community College before transferring to Incarnate Word, where he initially played for Eric Morris before transitioning to the coaching staff in 2021. He joined Morris as a graduate assistant at Washington State, and then assumed the quarterbacks role at North Texas in 2023. He was promoted to passing game coordinator ahead of the 2025 season.

Brophy's victory continues 2022 winner Kenny Dillingham's special run with the FootballScoop Quarterbacks Coach of the Year award. His offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo won the honor last season, and Brophy played quarterback for Dillingham at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.
