After two decades leading the West Liberty (D-II - WV) program, head coach Roger Waialae has decided to retire.
Waialae earned his 100th win with the program earlier this season, placing him second on the school's all-time wins list, behind only Hall of Famer Joe Bartell.
A member of the West Liberty coaching staff dating back to 1992, Waialae took over the head coaching role in 2005 and led them to some of the most successful seasons in the school's history.
Over the past 21 seasons, Waialae's stamp on the program has included an 11-win season and appearance in the Division II quarterfinals in 2009, and leading the nation in scoring and total offense in 2009 and 2010.
A Hawaii native, Waialae is one of only a handful from the Pacific Islands to hold a college head football coaching job at the NCAA level, and is the only one at the Division II level.
A former All-American at the small college level at Dubuque (D-III - IA), West Liberty developed19 All-Americans, had a two-time Harlon Hill runner-up, and rewrote a number of Division II passing records under Waialae's leadership.
Heading into the final week of the season, West Liberty is 2-8, and will play the final game of the Waialae era at home against Mountain East opponent Wheeling University (D-II - WV), who is currently 6-4.
