Dick Bumpas is set to retire as TCU's defensive coordinator, FootballScoop learned on Wednesday evening.
Bumpas has been the Frogs' defensive coordinator since 2004, helping the club win four Mountain West championships and a share of the 2014 Big 12 championship while turning TCU's defense into one of the most consistent units in college football. TCU led the nation in total defense in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and ranked sixth in yards per play allowed, eighth in scoring defense and first in takeaways per game in 2014.
He was also a four-time finalist for the Broyles Award.
A 1973 Arkansas graduate and a 2006 Arkansas Hall of Honor inductee, Bumpas coached with Gary Patterson at Kansas State, Tennessee Tech, Utah State and Navy. Bumpas also made stops at Army, Air Force, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Houston and Western Michigan - plus two stints at his alma mater.
Patterson is expected to fill the defensive coordinator role from within the staff.
