After leading the team to an appearance in Super Bowl 50 and an outstanding 17-2 record, the Carolina Panthers have signed head coach Ron Rivera to a one-year extension according to the Charlotte Observer.
The Observer points out that the deal was quietly done earlier this spring and not formally announced by the team. Under the new terms, Rivera will be under contract through the 2018 season and will make more than $6 million annually. The $6 million salary puts him among the top ten highest paid head coaches in the NFL among the company of Bruce Arians (Arizona Cardinals), Jason Garrett (Dallas Cowboys) and Mike McCarthy (Green Bay) as other guys in the $6 million range.
Ian Rapoport provided some more details on Rivera's new deal.
In five seasons as a head coach, Rivera has rebuilt the Panthers organization after two losing seasons in his first two years leading the team, going 47-32-1 overall including three straight NFC South Division titles.
Back in February, the Panthers announced that the entire assistant coaching staff received two-year contract extensions taking them through the 2017 season.
With a franchise quarterback in Cam Newton, a great nucleus of play makers in place, and some added stability for Rivera and his assistants, Carolina should be a dangerous playoff contender the next few seasons.
